HYDE Canyon Jacket — Camel Waxy Cowhide with Grey Shearling Collar | Men's Luxury USA-Made Western Jacket
Why we selected it
The Canyon is in the Hyde collection because it solves a problem most outerwear cannot — it is genuinely warm enough for real mountain cold and considered enough for everywhere else. Four materials work together in a single jacket: a waxy, distressed cowhide shell in warm camel that improves in every condition, a grey shearling double collar for warmth at the neck where it matters most, smooth Rustic Napa leather framing the placket and trim, and a camel Italian wool-cashmere lining that makes the interior feel like a luxury in itself. This is Western heritage outerwear built to the standard of a Hyde investment piece.
Craftsmanship
Made in Los Angeles by a three-generation family leather atelier with over four decades of craft behind every seam. The shell is a waxy cowhide — North African skins, double-dyed and drum-finished rather than sprayed, so the colour penetrates rather than coats. The first dye layer is lighter; the darker second layer sits over it, and as the surface breaks through with wear, the lighter tone beneath creates a natural distressed character that no two jackets develop identically. A slight oiled finish gives the surface its signature waxy feel — weather-resistant, tactile, and deeply distinctive. Six to seven skins are hand-matched per garment. Every seam is sewn at exactly ten stitches per inch. The entire finished garment is pressed.
The materials
The double collar is lined in grey shearling for warmth at the neck — natural insulation that synthetic alternatives cannot approach. The placket and trim are finished in smooth Napa leather in a warm Rustic tone, framing the waxy camel shell with a lustrous contrast. The interior is lined in an Italian wool and cashmere blend — 95% wool, 5% cashmere — warm without weight, with a soft hand that makes the jacket a pleasure to pull on in any temperature.
Styling
The warm camel tone of the waxy cowhide pairs naturally with denim, moleskin trousers, and heavyweight knitwear. Wear the double collar up in mountain wind for full protection, or folded down over a roll-neck for the lodge. The waxy surface sheds light rain without any treatment. The Rustic Napa trim ties the jacket to brown boots and tan accessories effortlessly. It layers over a mid-weight base and under nothing — this is the outer layer.
Investment quality
Waxy double-dyed cowhide requires multiple dyeing and finishing steps that standard leather manufacturing skips entirely. The drum-dye process, the oiled finish, the grey shearling collar, the Rustic Napa placket, and the Italian wool-cashmere lining represent a convergence of materials and craft at a price point that is, frankly, difficult to justify to anyone who has not held the jacket. At $2,895 the Canyon is the jacket that makes every other jacket in the wardrobe redundant.
